Extraterrestrial Visitors To Planet Earth II    - Travels In Time
Or- A Very Brief Look At The Really Really Big Picture

The Relationship of Time and Space
Now that we have established that most means of travel require vast periods of time, let's take a moment and look at how time and space interact to form our awareness of both.  It is difficult, if not completely impossible, to travel to a different position without moving through time.  Under ordinary conditions, time is in constant motion, and moves only in one direction.  General Relativity allows time and/or space to be curved by high concentrations of gravitional pull (a black hole might work). To effectively cross interstellar distances in human spans would almost demand such a warping of space and time.

If our alien visitors are able to warp the fabric of spacetime, we must also consider the possibility that rather than instellar journies, they have made intertemporal journies.  It seems just as likely to be visited from our distant decendants as by foreign excursionists.  And wouldn't that explain why they never stop to chat?  Everyone knows that if you change the past, you change the present, so it would be genuine necessity for timetrippers to avoid contact.  It would also explain the common claim of beings from UFO inhabitants appearing to be humanoid, on those rare occasions we have interacted with them.

And our distant relations might want to take a quick peek at us, from time to time.  Imagine sending the kids on a field trip to see the building of the Great Wall of China, or a college dissertation on the sociology of the Mayan civilization.  The only sure way to find out is for us to be able to travel in time, and thereby join the private club of "Those Who Are In The Know".

Humanoid Aliens - Created In Our Own Image?
The idea of a visitor from another world that has two arms, two legs, and a head is the most difficult popular idea about them for me to accept.  A very brief look at the history of life on earth reveals that we are most likely the result of at least two major events.  Before the dinosaurs, there is strong evidence to suggest that even more of the life forms on the planet were wiped out by an asteroid impact.  Besides, the humanoid form is a bit soft and vulnerable.

Much more likely would be the original hard shelled creatures, or a reptillian or amphibian sort of hide.  Jellyfish and horseshoe crabs seem to have reached an evolutionary plateau that requires no further improvement.  It might be interesting to note that neither of these types of creature were greatly affected by past meteorite impacts  I would be less surprised by intelligent bacterium than by humanoids.  Amoeba with a hive mind might do well on long interstellar voyages.  Suspended animation would make such long journies plausible, maybe even practical.

Alien Spacecraft Design 101
UFOs have been spotted.  I have no doubt whatsoever that people have seen objects in the sky that they could not identify.  I hestitate to say that those craft come from other places or times.  Many of them are pranks and hoaxes, that is well known by even the experts.  The reflection of the sun might cause a trick of the light that becomes an unintentional misperception.  Weather balloons and top secret aircraft could account for other sightings.  But there is always a small percentage that simply have no verifiable or even logical explanation.

It is a safe bet that we aren't going to be visited by anyone, alien or future, using fossil fuel for their power.  Likewise, there is a shortage of solar power in the dark of intersolar space.  For that matter, the only fuel source available is going to be hydrogen, and even that gets mightily thin in the great beyond.  This helps to explain UFO sightings near a lot of water, as it would be an easy source for hydrogen.  Another possibility that isn't much of a stretch is something that we haven't thought of.  Really.  It could be anything at all, even that CO2 that has everyone up in arms at the moment.  One man's waste is another being's treasure.

What about all the different descriptions of space craft?  Sometimes they are round, and sometimes they look like cigars or boomerangs or several dozen other shapes.  Is this really a mystery to anyone?  How many of your neighbors have the same make and model of vehicle as you do?  Even if all of our alien visitors come from the same city on one planet, it isn't hard to think of various styles of vehicle.  The cigar shape could be a sportscar model, or used primarily for underwater purposes.  Flying wings and saucer shapes may have been in vogue for a couple of years.  Seriously, how many of the craft that we have sent off into space have resembled one another?  It would be more mysterious if there weren't any variation, as that would indicate large numbers of craft permanently stationed  on or near the planet.  But I would not expect  today's visitors to be driving the same jalopies that the visitors in ancient times arrived in.
